Chapter 25

Morgan woke with a jerk, sitting upright in bed and dislodging Misty, who had camped out by her hip. She had been dreaming, and the dream was at the point where it could turn good or bad, when she jarred awake by a loud noise coming through the open window. She was disoriented for a moment and looked around, trying to get her bearings. She was startled when she saw the shimmering form of Meredith sitting in a chair by the door to the widow's walk.

"You're still here?" Morgan asked.

"Yes, you were too upset for me to leave you, and I didn't like the fact that Cora just disappeared from our view. Of course, your having her swallowed up by the mist didn't help."

"We have already been over that. It was an automatic reaction. Self-preservation, if you will. I never thought to watch where she disappeared to. I just wanted to hide from her."

"It's okay, Morgan, I understand. I'm sure I would have done the same thing. You've been tossing and turning for the last hour. Bad dreams?"

Meredith’s question reminded Morgan of the loud sound she had heard from the beach. Throwing off the covers, she got to her feet and walked over to the door to the widow's walk. Misty meowed at her and jumped back up on the bed, not interested in any midnight strolls out on the widow's walk. Morgan made her way to the railing of the terrace, where she could hear laughter and shouts from the beach. The night air was still, and the voices carried, clear and easy to discern. She looked at her aunt, who had followed her, gliding across to the terrace, searching for reassurance.

"Well, they sound like they're having a lot of fun," Meredith said.

Morgan didn't answer, instead, she listened to the rowdy yells down below. It didn't take long for her to figure out the group of men sitting on the beach had been indulging in a fair amount of alcohol. As she listened for a second, she thought she recognized a voice. It took a moment for it to click who it was. Then she realized it was Bruno, one of the crewmembers from the Roughneck. They seemed to be having a good time, and it sounded harmless enough. Morgan smiled to herself as she remembered that as a teenager, she had spent quite a few hours on the beach doing the same thing. Then she heard a voice calling out to the men. She couldn't hear the words, but she recognized the authority, and she had a feeling their captain had come to settle them down.

Suddenly one of the men screamed out in terror. Morgan leaned over the railing to try and see what was going on. It wasn't hard to hear the fear in the men's voices as they asked each other what had happened.

"Did you see that? She came out of the water. My God, it had to be a sea hag. I've never seen anything so ugly in my life.
